Obesity in America Defined - Facts, Risks, & Causes

The definition of obesity is the condition of an excess amount of fat in the body. Someone considered morbidly obese is generally 100 lbs over their normal weight. Did you know that in the United States 2/3 of the population are overweight? Nearly a third is considered obese. The sad fact is obesity claims 325,000 lives each year. These stats are alarming.
Obese people have a higher probability of premature death than someone at a normal healthy weight. Here are some health disorders often associated with obesity that may put life at risk.
  • Cancer
  • Coronary vascular disease/Heart Disease
  • Diabetes-type 2
  • Sleep apnea
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Thyroid problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Acid Reflex
  • Stress urinary incontinence
  • Depression with possible thoughts of suicide
Besides these serious health conditions it is a fact that obesity can have an adverse effect in many areas of a person's life. If you are obese you may already have experienced the following;
  • discrimination in the workplace
  • been denied a job
  • maybe cut from a sport or team
  • have failed personal relationships
  • personal issues like; heavy breathing, lack of energy, irregular digestion, or excessive sweating
  • lack of confidence
  • low self esteem
  • social seclusion
Why are we allowing obesity to steal our lives? We have been a nation living in the fast lane willing to compromise healthy food choices and good eating habits for convenience. Fast easy available food sources have won hands down. Unfortunately we do not realize what we are passing onto our children. We cannot continue this dangerous cycle.
When my daughter was a toddler my friend and I would say on our frequent trips to the mall, "have french-fry will travel." Yes, we were guilty of food rewards to keep our kids happy during our all day shopping excursions. I heard it said just this past week, "food that comes through a car window is not food." We are now paying for our bad habits with our health, our family's health, and the heath of our entire nation.
If we decide to make better food choices it will not be affective without exercise. America's fascination and interest in computers, video gaming, and incredible TV programming are all contributing factors to our weight problems. We must get up from the couch and off the computers and move. Parents need to set better examples for their children by regaining their health and adopting a regular weekly exercise routine. If we do not seek a solution soon to the problem that our country faces in obesity our nation will become weakened and the cycle will continue.
