What is Creating the Problem of Obesity in America?

The ever growing problem of obesity in America can be summed up in one word - childhood. It can start as early as five to six years old. Children who are classified as obese in late childhood-early teen years are almost guaranteed that this problem will continue throughout their whole lives. What is amazing is that only one or two percent of weight issues are caused by legitimate physical problems.
While the topic is increasingly featured on TV, online, and in the print media, the numbers continue to grow. The subject is now a focus of organizations like the Center for Disease Control. (CDC) Along with cancer, flu epidemics and the like, overeating is an actual public health issue. America's first lady has adopted childhood weight problems as her official cause.
There are numerous causes of the "fattening" of Americans. In fact, the CDC has coined a term, obesogenic to explain the phenomena to some degree. In simple terms, it means that Americans are influenced by items and activities that encourage overeating, fat rich foods and a lack of exercise. Simple activities like walking and climbing stairs are now looked at as extra-ciricular activities.
Childhood obesity can result from numerous factors, some of which are environmental and cultural. Too many families today think that the drive -through at a fast food joint qualifies as dinner together. Some sit down together at the kitchen table, yet their upbringing considers heaping bowls of pasta and potatoes as a way of showing love. Being online on social networking sites is replacing going over to neighbor's house to play for a lot of kids.
When a person eats more than their body can burn up, weight can pile on. Add to this the genetic aspect and overweight parent raises the chance of his/her child following their lead by 50 percent. This percentage climbs to 80 when both parents are tipping the scales beyond what is normal.
Without recognition of the immensity of the problem of obesity in the United States, our entire country risks becoming sluggish and in turn, less adaptable and expedient than emerging economic powers like China and India. These cultures are far more inclined to eat smaller portions and red meat is not a daily part of their diets. Add to this the lack of over-processed white foods like enriched flours and sugar, and it easy to see how the way Americans eat is slowly but surely affecting our nation in numerous ways.
