I have such a strong sweet tooth. It talks to me in many different varieties daily. And I am not discriminating about them either, I like them all. I like chocolate chip cookies, chocolate ice cream, and decadent chocolate cakes are just some of life's best goodies to enjoy. Banana cream pie, three berry muffins, and Snickers are right at the top of the list also. Those sweet tasting goodies are known to help to increase our sugar and food cravings. They have you on a natural high.
But here is the problem: When I eat refined sugars, my temporary high which makes me feel good is also causing my blood sugars to go too high. Its at that point you your blood sugar goes off the charts, and leaves you feeling tired, sluggish, and you just want to lay on the couch all afternoon.
Today, as an experiment, notice how tired you feel after eating these foods. Once you take notice, you will be amazed at its affect on your energy.
Want to get off that roller coaster? Try this: I want you to stop eating bland food. What has been happening to you is you are setting ourself up for failure. How? By sacrificing taste for bland food. I don't think that is what you want to do. I think you have been eating the bland food to either lose weight or keep it off. Good intentions, but they are backfiring over time.
To put some life and taste back into your food, you can experiment with using herbs and spices. I pick up 1 new spice each week at my natural food store and then use it in a casserole or egg dishes.
I have also started using flavored oils to my dishes and the taste is excellent. Since they tend to be on the expensive side, just use them as a finishing touch to your meals. Besides, I have found I don't get that much of a taste difference when I cook with them. so just add right before serving. Then you really get the flavor.
Here are a couple that I use:
I put a tablespoon of lemon oil over my veggies omelet.
I spray a bland store bought salad dressing on my salad and then add 1 tablespoon of my lemon oil or garlic oil. It's delicious. Try it.
I sprinkle 1 tablespoon of blood orange oil over my broccoli or green beans.
The possibilities of what you can do with flavored oils and spices are endless. You never have to get bored. And if you are worried about the calories in a tablespoon of oil, don't. Your body needs it and it will satisfy you to eat less. All those fat free foods leave you wanting for more.
Most of the time it is hard to stop sugar and food cravings. It does take a concerted effort. But it's worth it for your health in the long run. You don't want to sacrifice what you want long term ( good health, slimmer body) for what you want at the moment. That chocolate bar is only worth 5 minutes of pleasure. How much pleasure will you get out of being down a size?
You will get use to it. It's a matter of developing better habits. What you have to watch out for is your mind. That you have to keep working on.
