That New Year's resolution to lose all that weight? How many of us have given up on that resolution yet? It's a yearly ritual. Well it turns out we are not so different from our politician friends! All those resolutions to change the way Washington works, cut out the fat in our budget, set us on a path towards prosperity? Sure there have been a few changes, but are we really on a different path than we were a few years ago? Or will we stick with it for a while and start getting fat again?<br />
The fact is, we need substantial changes and not just enough to please the constituents. We are driving our country and our economy off a cliff, and all we get is a different radio station. The rhetoric changes, but remember that we are still in debt, we still can't fund our entitlement programs, and partisanship in our nation's capital is worse than ever. Our debt problems do not go away with the sweep of a pen by this super committee. And our problems don't get fixed when we refuse to take on the entitlements that are weighing us down.<br />
It was no surprise that we found ourselves in these dire straits. Like that delicious cake on your birthday, the ice cream when your boyfriend breaks up with you, or the beers after a hard day's work, it feels good when we get to eat what we want. We like when our politicians bring home the pork to us, and we don't like to think about how much we need that spending diet. Well it's time to suck it up and put our country on a diet that really works. We need some leadership in Washington, and it's gonna take a serious fitness trainer to whip us into shape.<br />
Ronald Reagan was famous for asking "are you better off than you were 4 years ago?" Well I ask you the same thing: how much has really changed? Not just these 4 years, but the years and decades before us. Did we simply shed a few pounds and gain it back, or did we make the necessary attitude changes? Things won't fix themselves on their own. We can't magically create more workers to support our retiring seniors. We need to change the culture that says entitlements will be there no matter what. We can't magically wish away the debt (though wouldn't that be nice?), we need to take serious measures to get ourselves under control. America has an obesity problem through and through. It's time to shape up America, and make sure our politicians do too.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;"><div style="text-align: left;">Andre P. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in three Americans is overweight. Another one-third is obese, meaning they are at least 20 percent heavier than their ideal body weight. Approximately one in 20 people is morbidly obese, or 50 to 100 percent above his/her ideal body weight.<br />
Being overweight or obese increases the risk of acquiring serious medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, and much more. Carrying extra weight puts increased stress on the body, especially the bones/joints of the legs, making it difficult to walk. In addition, breathing problems such as sleep apnea and asthma can result from being overweight or obese.<br />
In recent years, bariatric equipment has been further developed to accommodate the growing number of individuals who are overweight or obese, whether for medical and emergency services, everyday life mobility, or to enjoy travel.<br />
What are hospitals, fire departments and other emergency services doing to accommodate individuals who are overweight or obese? They're investing in bigger, stronger, bariatric equipment. Across the country, more and more hospitals are offering bigger wheelchairs, electronic lifts, stretchers, walkers, and patient privacy curtains; sturdier beds, floor-mounted toilets, larger bathrooms, and double wide chairs. They're increasing the weight limit on CT scanners. Ambulances are being retrofitted with sturdier floorboards, automated stretchers that hold more weight, wider beds, ramps, removable hoists and more.<br />
Regardless of their weight, or health problems they may have stemming from their weight, individuals who are overweight or obese need and want to travel, and require special equipment to do so. Maneuvering around a large cruise ship, theme park, convention center, or even the grocery store can be a great challenge for individuals who are overweight or obese. Plus, it's very likely that they require special needs equipment for travel for other health issues, such as asthma, sleep apnea, etc.<br />
To accommodate individuals who are overweight or obese and allow them to travel without barriers, Special Needs Group offers a wide range of high-quality, reliable bariatric and special needs equipment. This includes:<br />
• Wheelchair rentals accommodating individuals weighing up to 750 pounds <br />
• Scooter rentals for those weighing up to 500 pounds <br />
• Extra wide rollator rentals (walkers with a seat) <br />
• Oxygen and oxygen equipment rentals<br />
Everyone, regardless of their weight, should and does have the right to travel. Special Needs Group is making great strides in helping thousands of individuals with special needs, including those who are overweight or obese, realize their travel dreams. By offering bariatric equipment rentals, the company is allowing these individuals to comfortably enjoy exploring the world, without travel barriers.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">For more information, visit http://www.specialneedsgroup.com.<br />

In poorer and underdeveloped countries, obesity is rarely the problem because they are lack of nutritional food to eat. USA is now a developed country and obesity is affecting a lot of people in the country.<br />
Why, you may ask. The first cause of obesity in the US is due to the fact that advancement in technology. Of course, the people have longer lifespans now since there are more health facilities and treatments available now. However, since there are a lot of inventions which have made our lives easier, such as cars and buses, we no longer have the need to walk long distances to travel. We do not need to use the traditional hard way to use our clothes anymore with the invention of washing machine. Therefore, we have fewer chances to get our bodies moving and obesity problem is getting worse when we keep looking for excuses to avoid exercising.<br />
Fast food is getting more and more easily available in the USA now. Fast food contains a lot of fats and sodium which are bad for health and can cause overweight problems. Although the people know that the food is unhealthy, they still consume it due to its convenience and easy availability. Furthermore, food portion is getting bigger and bigger nowadays and some seems to exceed the recommended daily intake. When you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight as the excess calories will be stored as fat in your body.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">You need to know the solutions to obesity problem once you have identified the cause. You need to deal with the problem as fast as you can before it is too late. Now, if I were still a physical education teacher today, and I wanted to do something significant and measurable to combat the growing problem of childhood obesity in this country, I'd do the following things to help turn the tide.<br />
• I'd start the year off by testing my students in a number of different functional fitness activities, but I'd pay special attention to pull ups.<br />
• I'd divide the students into two groups, those who can do at least one pull up (group X), and those who can't do any pull ups (group Y).<br />
• I'd then divide the students up into teams of equal size, and each team would be required to have at least one student who can do a pull ups (from group X).<br />
• I'd make the student(s) from group X responsible for helping students from group Y learn to do pull ups, and reward the successes accordingly.<br />
• I'd create at least one (and probably three or four) height adjustable pull up station, and show all students how to use the strategy of leg assisted pull ups, "inching" their way up the chain until they eventually run out of leg assistance and can do regular pull ups.<br />
• I'd also have a Total Gym to help students with extraordinary weight problems to make regular, measurable progress towards regular pull ups.<br />
• I'd introduce a practical context within which kids would understand good nutritional habits, implement and monitor it.<br />
• I'd make sure that everyone from group X knows how to work correctly with their teammates from group Y.<br />
• I'd intentionally stack the deck and build small but regular successes (motivation) into the program for all participants<br />
• I'd make quarterly checks to see what's happening in each group.<br />
• I'd check out the possibility of having some intra-class, intra-grade, even intra-school competitions, being careful to compare group to group instead of individual student to individual student.<br />
• As far as individual students are concerned, I'd encourage self-competition over competition with other students.<br />
• The first goal is to make sure that all participants make regular, tangible progress over a significant period of time...at least 12 weeks. This will establish a pattern of public success, and internalize the motivation.<br />
• The primary, long term goal of course would be to significantly increase the percentage of students who are members of group X from quarter to quarter, semester to semester, year to year.<br />
• I'd generate regular press releases (on school letterhead) so the local media could be kept updated and would report regularly on how we're attacking childhood obesity in our school.<br />
• I'd build a PYOW web-site so that the computerized generation can check out all kinds of related things whenever they're on line.<br />
• I'd involve the private sector, many of whom are anxious to be identified with, even sponsor public educational success in a variety of ways.<br />
• I'd organize an annual Pull Up A Thon between schools to help raise funds to benefit a worthwhile, local charity.<br />
• I'd try to track all kinds of related behaviors, including academic success.<br />
• I'd make it a privilege to participate. Forcing participation turns pull ups into a job and effectively reduces its value to students.<br />
• I'd take advantage of the fact that all students want to be strong, not weak, and I'd cultivate a mentality favoring strength and independence over weakness and dependence.<br />
• I'd tell other physical educators about this program and encourage them to develop programs of their own for their own students.<br />
• I'd find companies in the area who'd like to sponsor PYOW employee wellness programs, and have students explain and design their program.<br />
• I'd find police and fire departments who'd like to participate and have students explain and design their program.<br />
• I'd find educators in schools who'd like to participate and have students explain and design their program.<br />
• I'd find parents who'd like to participate and have students design their PYOW program.<br />
• I'd go to city hall and recruit politicians who'd like to participate, etc.<br />
• I'd go to park districts, Boy's and Girl's Clubs, YM/WCA's, Health Clubs, Pre-Schools, and churches, to find out who else in the community would like to be able to physically Pull Their Own Weight, then encourage the students to help them do so.<br />
• I'd encourage students to take pride in their peer's, (and generally in other people's) success.<br />
• And I'll add more things to do when and if they come to me.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">Rick Osbourne spent 17 years as a physical educator and coach. That life expectancy ranks 42d in the world, down from 11th twenty years earlier. </i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>- Source: Census Bureau and National Center for Health Statistics </i></div><div style="text-align: justify;">BLAME-STORMING THE HEALTH CRISIS</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Who is responsible for the health crisis in America? Is it the government? The state of the economy? Parents? Schools? What about you and me? Restaurants? Grocery stores? Or is it our busy schedules? How about those get-togethers and parties you attend? Maybe the presented food choices are to blame. Yes! "Blame." That is the word I was looking for! We are looking for someone or some institution to blame for our health crisis.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">IS THERE A GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACY?</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Is there a government conspiracy? If so, just who are the conspirators? Let us get one thing straight. You and I do not need anyone's help in creating a health crisis. There is a reason for this. You and I are the greatest conspirators of our own lives. We have received more than enough information to let us know what to do to enhance our health and yet we, in many cases, do not act and make the changes. I think that clarifies the conspiracy theory in a nutshell. When I speak of this health crisis, I am not talking about medical insurance or medical costs or treatment. True, this is an important issue. However, this issue only touches on the surface of the problem. How we think, eat and live is the real cause. So who or what is responsible? Do you have an idea? Who is the villain or culprit?</div><div style="text-align: justify;">YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR HEALTH</div><div style="text-align: justify;">You are personally responsible for all the decisions you make. Do not blame any institution or anyone else for your poor choices that lead to disease, illness and poor health.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">WHY AMERICANS RANK LOW ON LONGEVITY</div><div style="text-align: justify;">What has caused America to fall so far behind the statistics on longevity in the world? The ranking went from 11th to 42d. Americans do live longer, but not as long as 41 other countries, according to National Center on Health Statistics. Why is one of the richest countries in the world not able to keep up with other countries? Some say it is because the United States has no universal health care. I do not see that as the primary reason since we have never had universal health care. Here is what I think are some of the primary reasons for this trend:</div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Adults in the United States have one of the highest obesity rates in the world. One third of U.S. adults 20 years and older are obese and about two thirds are overweight, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.</li>
<li>Americans are extremely sedentary in their lifestyles.</li>
<li>Americans do not exercise at all or very little.</li>
<li>Americans eat too much and they eat too much processed foods, sugar and fat.</li>
<li>As long as the health care debate is limited to insurance, the health of Americans will not improve.</li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;">SAM MADE ME DO IT</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Kids sometimes will do the craziest things. Once upon a time, there were two brothers. We will call them Sam and Jake. As school-aged brothers, Sam challenged Jake to climb a tree, and so he does. Then Jake is challenged, on a dare, to go farther out on a long, thin branch of the tree. He gets about half way out before the limb breaks, and he comes falling to the earth with a thump. Jake broke his nose and got some cuts and bruises. Both kids report to their mother and of course Mom asks Jake, "How did this happen?" Jake responds, "Sam made me do it!"</div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are many complaints I hear about all that enticing processed food in the grocery stores. There are remarks about the special challenge of eating out: The portion sizes are too big, and there are all those irresistible, unhealthy "choices" available. I see no difference between Jake's response and these complaining adults' reactions to their plight - or, should I say, dilemma. Jake said, "Sam made me do it." Translation: Sam is responsible for Jake's poor decision to go out on a limb. That is nonsense. Jake is responsible for his own decision to go out on a limb. We adults are too frequently "going out on a limb" with our health by making poor choices while laying the blame on external circumstances or institutions -- whether commercial, social, or governmental. Cease fire with such thoughts of blaming external circumstances or other people. Take charge. Be accountable for your own actions.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Are our institutions off the hook when it becomes to responsibility? No, they are not. I use the term "institution" in a broad sense, to include the following:</div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Federal, state and local governments</li>
<li>Political parties and politicians</li>
<li>Teachers and school boards</li>
<li>Physicians, dentists, nurses</li>
<li>Journalists, press and media</li>
<li>CEO's and corporate shareholders</li>
<li>Restaurateurs, marketers</li>
<li>School cafeterias</li>
<li>Workplace cafeterias</li>
<li>Clergy, little league coaches</li>
<li>Parents and caregivers</li>
<li>Law enforcement officers, parole officers</li>
<li>Military leaders (from the squad leader upward)</li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;">INSTITUTIONS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE</div><div style="text-align: justify;">What kind of leadership responsibility do institutions have when it comes to healthy eating and exercise? Institutions, as well as all leaders, have a heightened level of responsibility beyond rules and regulations of the organization. Our institutions have the special responsibility to "walk the talk," clarify the goals of health and fitness, and assume a more visionary role to set and implement standards for a solution to our health crisis. Our institutions are morally obligated to set the example by living by the higher standard required of them as leaders. This can be accomplished through legislation, executive orders and both internal and public policy making. Our institutions need to deal with the problem directly and use their special influence to save lives and prevent suffering.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">HEALTH INSURANCE DOES NOT EQUATE TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Health insurance will not accomplish this. Are you looking for true medical insurance? Make your premium payments in the form of living a healthy lifestyle void of dependence on a home pharmacy of medications. Most of our medications are prescribed because of our lifestyles, not because we simply got sick. I am talking about the overwhelming rule and not the exception.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are exceptional cases where, despite a healthy lifestyle, serious disease or illness happens. Would you cease to drive a car simply because someone had an automobile accident? In addition, you certainly should not cease to lead a healthy lifestyle just because someone you know lived to be 100 years old as a smoker. That would be a fatal error in thinking. It is just this type of thinking that is killing and maiming Americans. Ban this type of thinking from your mind.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Take the educational institutions for America's young people. Schools are primarily focused on delivering on educating our youth with an approved curriculum. Schools need to go beyond mere curriculum, to consider the whole child, setting improved fitness and healthy eating as a priority. Fitness and healthy eating should be a part of the curriculum, as they play a major role in the development of a child.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">TEACHERS ARE ROLE MODELS</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Teachers are role models and leaders when it comes to eating and exercise habits and how they portray their attitudes about fitness and health in school. John Maxwell defines leadership as "influence - nothing more, nothing less." Moving beyond the position of the teacher to assessing the ability of the teacher to influence others as a leader is essential. This refers to those who would consider themselves followers, and those outside that circle.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Leadership builds character, because without maintaining integrity and trustworthiness, the capability to positively influence will disappear. There are many other definitions of leadership. They all point to a leader having influence on others and providing to them the guidance and direction necessary to envision a long-term view of the future.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">POINT OUR CHILDREN IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Policy is made from the top down through legislation, executive order, mission and policy statements. Where there is a void in such top-down leadership, the initiative must begin from the ground up. Educational institutions by virtue of their access to vast blocks of our children's time, have a unique responsibility to go beyond mere curriculum to consider the whole child. By offering and stressing healthier choices, they are setting precedent for the rest of that child's life.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Early in America's pioneer history, schoolteachers were expected to be morally beyond reproach in every detail of their own lifestyle. This reflected how those communities wanted to influence their children's future and the future of the country as a whole. Today's America likewise needs today's schoolteachers to be wholeheartedly health conscious for the same reason. Our future depends on it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">That is not to say that all schoolteachers should be fashion-model thin or good-looking or in any way shaped by the media's image. An overweight teacher who is working to improve her fitness would be preferable over the Size 4 who is proud to eat candy bars and drink sodas in front of her pupils. Institutions are role models in all that they say and do or do not say or do. Their policies and actions set the standards.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">WE ARE KILLING OUR CHILDREN</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Look at some statistics on childhood obesity in America. About 15 percent of children and adolescents ages 6-19 years are seriously overweight. The percentage of children and adolescents who are defined as overweight has nearly tripled since the early 1970s.</div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Over 10 percent of preschool children between ages of two and five are overweight.</li>
<li>Another 15 percent of children and teens ages 6-19 are considered at risk of becoming overweight.</li>
<li>Researchers found that lowered self-esteem was associated with being overweight in girls as young as five.</li>
<li>One in five children in the U.S. is overweight.</li>
<li>Children ages 10-13 who are obese are expected to have a 70% likelihood of suffering from obesity as adults.</li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC), 1999-2000 </i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) </i></div><div style="text-align: justify;">CHILDHOOD OBESITY ONLY AN INDICATOR AND NOT THE REAL PROBLEM</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Childhood obesity is only the indicator of an underlying problem of a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits. Address these underlying issues, and childhood obesity will be significantly reduced.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">SCHOOLS, TEACHERS AND PARENTS HAVE A HEIGHTENED LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Our schools, teachers and parents have a heightened level of leadership responsibility to address the statistics that are just a few of many indicators of the direction of the state of health of our children. Once these children become adults, they, too, will pass on their lifestyles to their children and will in all likelihood perpetuate poor eating and exercise habits. The consequences will manifest themselves as learning disabilities, increased crime, and socioeconomic problems which our children's generation cannot afford to inherit.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">THE MOTHER OF ALL INSTITUTIONAL EXCUSES</div><div style="text-align: justify;">What is the number one excuse institutions use for not doing more to fight the poor state of health of Americans?</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Answer: It is each individual's own decision as to how he or she wants to live, how he or she wants to eat and exercise or not. This is the mother of all institutional excuses. An institution using this excuse relinquishes its leadership responsibility as a visionary to lead and guide by example and exercise that institutional influence it possesses. The institutions need to ask the visionary question of what can they do to influence, guide and inspire each individual to make healthy lifestyle choices.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">WHY PYRAMIDS AND DIETARY GUIDELINES DON'T WORK</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Dietary guidelines, pyramids and charts have all failed to make Americans healthier. Why are they not working? Institutions are made up of individuals who are a cross-section of society who are therefore personally dealing with the same lifestyle issues about eating and exercise, as are all consumers.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Dietary guidelines do not work, because the vast majority of the food and beverage industry does not incorporate them into food choices and portion sizes we see on the shelves. Remember, this is from the perspective of the institution and its responsibility and in no way diminishes the personal responsibility of every individual to take charge of their own lifestyle and choices. Our children need special guidance to learn what personal responsibility means. That guidance must come from adults.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">GOVERNMENT SETS THE STANDARD AS A LEADER</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Emission controls in the automobile industry have resulted in smaller, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient cars; though more work remains to be done. These successes were accomplished through government regulation through the Clean Air Act and similar initiatives. We have another just as pressing form of pollution going on in America: health pollution.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">HEALTH POLLUTION</div><div style="text-align: justify;">We have a health pollution crisis on our hands in America, and - as with automobile emission regulations - the food and beverage industry needs to be regulated to meet improved standards for healthy eating through strict labeling, reduced portion sizes, and regulation and disclosure of unhealthy ingredients in our country's food supply.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The free market society needs some governmental fine-tuning in order to save American lives and prevent suffering. The cost of not doing so is enormous. Heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes (the four leading causes of death in the U.S.), and obesity, hypertension, and osteoporosis are all linked to diet and exercise. Americans and their children are the most over-fed and under-nourished group of people in the world.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">One out of two Americans is overweight. One-third of Americans are obese. Being overweight is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">ILLNESS AND DISEASE IS COSTING AMERICA BIG BUCKS</div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The total cost of stroke to the United States is estimated at about $43 billion per year.</li>
<li>$28 billion per year direct costs for medical care and therapy.</li>
<li>$15,000 is the average cost of care for a patient for up to 90 days after a stroke.</li>
<li>$35,000 for 10% of patients, the cost of care for the first 90 days after a stroke.</li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>*Statistics compiled from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council "Hospital Performance Report: 28 Common Medical Procedures and Treatments" (December 2002) </i></div><div style="text-align: justify;">FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The food and beverage industry as well as the health and wellness industry have a leadership responsibility to clean up their marketing. Misinformation and misleading claims are rampant. Observe carefully and you will detect the emotion-laden words, which are associated with poor choices and portion sizes:</div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Convenient (over-processed)</li>
<li>All natural (so is lard and corn syrup)</li>
<li>Lite or light (lots of added sugar)</li>
<li>Quick and easy (huge amounts of sodium)</li>
<li>Simple (check the label; not so simple, unpronounceable ingredients.)</li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;">In addition, the list goes on:</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Fun, exciting, easy, time saver, feels great, low-carb, no sugar, no fat, healthy, look great.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Will the food and beverage industry have an economic price to pay for such changes? Yes, the transitional period will have some associated costs, in the short term. In the end, the food and beverage industry as well as consumers and our country as a whole will all benefit from a healthier America with healthier food choices. In fact, this will result in innovation and new areas of revenue for the food and beverage industry, all while actively contributing to making Americans and America healthier and stronger.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">THE PUBLIC'S BASIC RIGHT TO KNOW</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Disclosure is the law for government in Florida and many other states and federal entities. The Sunshine Law of Florida establishes a basic right of access to most meetings of boards, commissions and other governing bodies of state and local governmental agencies or authorities. It has led to not only a more informed public, but also actually better government.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Full disclosure on food labels would likewise inform the public and result in healthier foods being produced and marketed. True full disclosure for the average consumer must be in the form of a simple "level of healthiness" and "level of nutrients" grade. The factors determining the simple, easy-to-understand grade must be clearly defined in easily understandable language.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">HEALTH POLLUTION A NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The present health pollution of America is a national security issue because the consequences go much farther into sociological issues, such as increased crime and poor learning ability. An unhealthy America cannot perform or think as well.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">LOOKING FORWARD</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Whatever challenges our country faces will be better met if we are healthier in mind and body. Sick and unhealthy Americans are living longer and living with meds. These Americans need to be weaned back to health and off the meds, where possible. In most cases, lifestyle changes will result in improved health, independent of meals. Our physicians are challenged with a special institutional leadership role in strategizing to prescribe lifestyle-based changes and not just medication so that they and not just medication so that they truly can take on the role of healers, not only for the patient but also for the nation. Keep America strong. The medication mindset without healthy eating and exercise is killing Americans.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">We have what it takes to change our culture for the betterment of all by taking personal responsibility for our lifestyles we lead. Our institutions have an equally important role model responsibility to set the tone and standard necessary to keep America healthy. Regardless of political affiliation, there should be complete agreement about personal and institutional responsibilities.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">By Lt. Col. Most certainly not; you already would (or should) have known. You have been ignoring reality all this time.<br />
In fact, if I am obese and my doctor said otherwise I would have known he/she was telling me a fat lie.<br />
So, by now you would have been noticing the gradual inflation of your health every time you go to your wardrobe or to the department store to choose your clothes. Your mirror would have been screaming at you for months or years, but you always kept on doing what you're doing.<br />
Well now, if you are obese, overweight, or are on the road to becoming, consider this simple argument...<br />
<b><i>What does it mean to be obese?</i></b><br />
It means...<br />
<ul><li>You're carrying around too much load, and you are not getting any younger.</li>
<li>You need a bigger, stronger heart since you have now significantly increased the workload for your heart. You can only increase the power of your heart by exercising - which you (most likely) have not been doing.</li>
<li>Your body mass index (BMI) is 30+</li>
<li>Maybe your belly jiggles when you laugh. But this is no laughing matter! Why?</li>
<li>You are three times more likely to suffer from heart disease,</li>
<li>You are four times more likely to suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure)</li>
<li>You are also five times more likely to develop diabetes, and</li>
<li>You have increased risk of developing cancer.</li>
</ul>Obesity shortens your life. Scientists have estimated that for every extra pound you put on you tend to shorten your lifespan by one month. So if you are 30 lbs over weight, there goes 2½ glorious years!<b><i>What can you do?</i></b><br />
Don't think you have to do anything big. Just think long-term.<br />
That's right. You might be hearing sounds like, "lose 30 lbs in as many days!" Hey, how long did it take you to put on that much weight? Much longer.<br />
Take it easy. Do it right. Do it for the right reasons. Do it for the health of it. Do it the healthy way. What is that?<br />
Change all the unhealthy practices to healthy ones - like <br />
<ul><li>increasing the rate at which you burn calories. Regular exercise. This also builds and strengthens muscles, which means increased calorie-burning capacity.</li>
<li>Eat more fruits, nuts, grains, and vegetables <b>and</b> less of the fatty, sugary foods.</li>
<li>Don't skip breakfast, and do not snack</li>
</ul><div style="text-align: left;">Those are just a few of the very important and surefire ways to have a normal body weight.</div><div style="text-align: left;">That's not any where nearly as difficult or costly as gastric bypass or liposuction. And it works.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>REFERENCES:</b><br />

Overweight people are 2 to 6 times more likely to develop hypertension, have a stroke, thrombosis and clots in the legs. Excess body fat can also lead to impaired cardiac function.<br />
2. Excess body fat can lead to insulin resistance and increase the likelihood of type 2 diabetes in both adults and children.<br />
3. Obesity can be a factor in the development of cancer, because of the eating patterns that get us to obesity (most people don't get obese by eating fruits and vegetables) also increase the likelihood of developing some kind of cancer. Inactivity also increases the risk of cancer. Some estimates suggest that poor diet and exercise may account for up to a third of the cancer risk. The types of cancer linked with obesity are endometrial cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer.<br />
4. Obese people are more likely to have degenerative joint disease. It makes it more likely to have sleep apnea, mechanical breathing constraints (particularly during exercise). It just takes more effort to work the chest wall if it has huge amounts of fat.<br />
5. Obese people have more problems with anesthesia during surgery, as well as compromised wound healing. It also increases the likelihood of developing gallbladder disease.<br />
6. A newly discovered consequence is fatty infiltration of the liver. This is known as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Some estimates suggest that as the liver becomes infiltrated with fat, it causes hepatitis and that can lead to liver failure.<br />
7. Obesity also has deep psychological effects: depression, being stigmatized by people, bullying and discrimination. This is really one of the least accepted forms of discriminations. We have made great advances in our culture: most of us accept that we can have different religious beliefs, or that we can have different ethnicity and still have the same rights. However, we are not sensitive to the individuals who are overweight.<br />
8. In 2002, the cost of overweight in the US was estimated to be 92 billion dollars!</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">Pablo Antuna's mission is to help you make conscious and intelligent eating choices that would help you live the life you really want. We were playing baseball and football. We always had plenty of choices to get the exercise that we needed and didn't even know we were getting it. Now days you can see that things have changed.<br />
We used to go to our friends house to talk to them and now they have cell phones and internet to communicate with. Meaning they don't have to move or walk anymore. They also have video games to play instead of the games themselves meaning no exercise. I read not to long ago that by 2012 80% of America is going to be over weight or obese. I also read the Dept.of Health in NY State says that 10% of 4 to 5 year olds are overweight. As they age, one in 5 boys ( ages 6 - 11 ) are overweight. This is a frightening fact because it has shown that being overweight leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, and even possibility of some cancers. The bad part is when children gain weight their fat cells stay there. When they loose weight they only shrink. When children start eating more again those cells remain hungry and start growing large again. That is why it is so important to start them out from the beginning.<br />
There are things we can do to teach our children to be aware of their eating habits. Lets face it children do not do the shopping for our homes, we do. So we can start by buying the right groceries. Get rid of the bad foods and start showing them that this is how you need to eat to have a healthy life. Just think how this will help you as well. If we start our children at a young age to eat fruits, vegetables, and healthy snacks you would be surprised at how they really do like them. There are other foods that are healthy as well. Such as yogurt, sugar free pudding, juice pops, or even whole grain cereal with skim milk. A lot of times it is us parents who don't eat enough of these and then our children follow. I know what your thinking, children love the fast food. We then need to work on getting rid of the fatty sauces that go on the burgers or order smaller meals.<br />
This is the most important part, teach them to be active again! Children need at least an hour of play to burn all that stored up energy. Children need after school activities like any sport they are interested in. It doesn't even have to be school associated. It can be you playing catch with them or chasing them. Imagine what this extra activity would do for you. All that extra activity would make you feel great. Imagine the free time you would have when they go to sleep early from being tired. The point is parents have to be involved or the children will never learn how to take care of themselves when they need to. If you're a parent who goes to the health club, see if you can find a way to involve your children. Try to set up a workout plan for them and monitor their results. It does not have to be great results but it teaches them the rewards of exercising and the knowledge to do so. Children follow what their parents do if you smoke and drink chances are they will too. We have to teach them when they are young so they do not end up like a bad statistic for overweight and sick children. We love them to much for that!</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">Protect the children from obesity and read more information on our healthy lifestyle site at: www.myamallshop.com<br />

The research used a novel approach to come to the conclusion that overeating is more to blame than inactivity for all those extra pounds. And with estimates suggesting nearly two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, finding out what's fueling this epidemic is important and perhaps the first step toward getting things under control.<br />
The work was just presented at the 17th European Congress on Obesity (ECO 2009) held in Amsterdam, Netherlands and applied a unique approach to see which contributed more to obesity - overeating or physical inactivity.<br />
The team started by testing 1,399 adults and 963 children to find out how many calories they burned under normal, real life situations.<br />
They also calculated how much the adults needed to eat to keep their weight stable, and how much the kids needed to eat so they maintained normal growth patterns.<br />
Next they looked at data from a national survey (known as NHANES) that kept records on the weight of Americans from the 1970s to the early 2000s, to look at real weight gain during that time.<br />
Finally, national food supply data was used to analyze how much the participants ate during that same thirty-year period.<br />
They then used the data on calorie intake vs. calories burned to come up with an estimate of expected weight gain over the period based solely on food intake.<br />
The thinking was that if the predicted weight gain based on what Americans ate was the same as the actual weight gain, overeating alone could be to blame for the weight increase. For kids the predicted and actual weight gain was nearly 9 pounds. This meant overeating was to blame for the added weight.<br />
"For adults, we predicted that they would be 10.8 kg (23.8 pounds) heavier, but in fact they were 8.6 kg (20 pounds) heavier," says researcher Boyd Swinburn director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention at Deakin University in Australia. "That suggests that excess food intake still explains the weight gain, but that there may have been increases in physical activity over the 30 years that have blunted what would otherwise have been a higher weight gain."<br />
To get back to the weight levels that were common in the 1970s, American's today would need to cut 350 calories a day for children and 500 calories a day for adults from our present intake.<br />
These days it's so much easier to eat those added calories - thanks to fast foods, processed and prepared meals, ever increasing portion sizes, too many bad fats and too few good ones, not to mention an impressive and always expanding selection of calorie laden drinks like smoothies, coffees, energy drinks and vitamin waters.<br />
If you'd rather be active to drop the extra weight you're carrying, experts have guidelines for activity that will help you succeed.<br />
Increase activity to about 150 minutes a day for children, 110 minutes per day for adults to see similar results from these efforts.<br />
If you haven't been active in a while, you need to check with your doctor first to be sure exercise is safe for you. Once you get the go-ahead, be sure to start slow and build your endurance over time.<br />
Based on this latest research, look for public health authorities in the U.S. and other countries to shift the emphasis in the battle against the effects of overeating and obesity to encourage calorie cutting over upping your activity level, though ideally both are key to losing weight and staying healthy.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">Next just head on over to the Daily Health Bulletin for more information the effects of overeating and getting and staying healthy, plus get 5 free fantastic health reports.</div><div style="overflow: hidden; text-align: justify;"><br />

During those years I noticed that kids who could perform pull ups were never overweight. And kids who were overweight could never perform pull ups. Now I know you don't have to be a gym teacher in order to see that. It's common knowledge. It's so common in fact that I think we've overlooked it as an incredibly simple solution to childhood obesity. Let me explain.<br />
Every Gym Teacher Knows What I'm Talking About<br />
From this simple observation that at least every other gym teacher in the nation will recognize, I drew the following conclusion. Start young (i.e. grades k, 1, and 2) before they've had a chance to gain much excess weight, and teach them to be able to perform at least one pull up. Then teach them that as long as they maintain the ability to perform at least one pull up, they can never be much overweight. Furthermore, the more pull ups they can do, the leaner and stronger they'll be, naturally.<br />
Now Hold Your Horses...<br />
"But hold your horses here," you say. I can hear it all now. "How am I going to teach my students to do pull ups when 90% of them completely despise the exercise, and whenever possible, they avoid the pull up bar like the plague? This not the military or a police academy where you can force the participants to do pull ups. This is a school. How can I teach kids to do something that they'd never practice? And even if they wanted to practice (which they don't), most of my students can't do pull ups, so they couldn't practice even if they wanted to."<br />
So How Do You Teach Kids To Love Doing Pull Ups<br />
These are of course good questions and I wouldn't be writing this article if I wasn't pretty sure that I had a good, quick, and practical answer in hand. So here goes. The solution to the problem is to use a height adjustable pull up bar which you can create inexpensively by hanging a chain (one inch links) solidly from a height of ten feet (picture it attached to a basketball backboard), so it reaches down to approximately three feet from the floor. This will accommodate the required height adjustment for all kids.<br />
Now using a snap hook and a center mounted pull up bar, you can attach the bar to the chain at any height you choose. You can raise and lower the bar at one inch increments, which will allow every student in your class to find a level where they can perform at least eight LEG ASSISTED PULL UPS. That is to say you can find a level where every student succeeds in front of their peers. Failure is not part of this program.<br />
Student's Inch Their Way To Success<br />
The strategy is to allow students to work out two to three times per week and increase their repetitions from eight to nine, ten, eleven, and twelve reps. When they can do twelve repetitions at a particular height, you move the bar up one inch and begin the whole eight to twelve rep routine all over again. What you'll witness is kids "inching" their way up the chain over time, until eventually they run out of leg assistance. At that point they'll have learned to do real live pull ups, a feat that most of 'em could never do before you took the time to teach them how.<br />
Emphasizing Self Competition<br />
It's important to emphasize self competition over competition with other students. Every student is different, and they will start at various starting points and finish at various times. But the key ingredient is that each student makes visible progress regularly. It's important they see that they are better this week than last week, better this month than last month, which means that if they persist, they will reach the goal of being able to physically pull their own weight.<br />
Some Will Need To Make Adjustments<br />
Now in order to reach this end goal, some kids will have to adjust their nutritional intake and lose a little weight. Others may want to add some calorie burning aerobic work to accomplish a similar goal. And still others may want to experiment with the time of day they when work out, or the amount of sleep they get at night. Regardless, encourage them to do whatever they need to do (short of anabolic steroids) to get their chin up to the bar without needing of leg assistance. Interestingly enough, you will find that the kids will make those adjustments naturally, on their own because when it's presented right, public success is built into the program right from the get go. And as successes are piled on top of successes in very thin slices, they add up to big successes, and the feeling that they can try something a little bit harder in front of the other kids and still expect to succeed will become more and more prevalent and resilient with each new workout.<br />
Self Confidence Will Win The Day<br />
Before you know it, the self esteem and self confidence that comes from succeeding in public will be visible in the way the student approaches all kinds of new tasks, from the pull up bar to memorizing their multiplication tables. When that "yes I can" attitude is firmly in place and has permeated every pore, you the gym teacher will have done much more than giving them a functional tool with which to avoid obesity for the rest of their life...which in itself is no small feat today. You will also have given those students an inner strength that will carry them through school, through the workplace, through the ups and downs of modern day family life. You will effectively give them the green light that will help them battle their way through the challenges that life inevitably offers, and the persistence to come out the other side with a smile on their face and a cup half full instead of half empty. And if you do, you will be the best teacher these kids will ever know. Not too bad for teaching kids to do pull ups, wouldn't you agree?<br />
What Should The Gym Teacher's Goal Be?<br />
I suggest that you find a starting place for every member of your class at the beginning of the school year. You'll discover right off the bat that some will be able to do regular pull ups, while others will need to use the leg assisted technique to learn how. With this thought in mind, the gym teacher's goal in my view should be to monitor the percentage of kids who can do regular pull ups, and to make sure that percentage is always going up. For example if ten percent of your class can do real live pull ups at the beginning of the year, it would be great if fifteen could do it by semester time, and twenty percent by the end of the school year...although you may do much better than that. In short, the closer we get to having all students vaccinated against obesity by maintaining the ability to physically pull their own weight, the closer we will be to winning the war on obesity.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">Rick Osbourne spent 17 years as a physical educator and coach. Nowadays more and more young people are leading a very sedentary lifestyle and, as a result, obesity amongst teenagers is becoming commonplace. Indeed, it is becoming so common today that doctors are starting to voice their concerns very loudly and finally parents, schools and even politicians are starting to sit up and take notice.<br />
Today there are more teenagers suffering from obesity than at any time in the country's history and many doctors are openly talking about this problem as being of epidemic proportions. It is frightening to think that the section of our population which we normally think of as being the fittest, most active and slimmest is now turning into a section of the population which is being viewed as the laziest and most obese. There is no doubt that this is a real problem which we do not need statistics to verify anymore and which we can see all around us.<br />
The real problem though is that the growing trend towards obesity amongst teenagers in America today is going to be far from easy to reverse.<br />
Most people would agree that there are two basic causes for today's teen obesity. The first is the simple fact that teenagers spend far too much time watching television, sitting in front of computers or playing the myriad of computerized games available these days and far too little time outside running around and getting some sort of exercise. The second reason for this problem is diet. The days of home cooking and family meals have virtually disappeared in many households and children are living on a diet of fast food which simply was not available a generation or two ago.<br />
However, while the cause of teenage obesity is clear and there is very little disagreement about it, parents, educators and doctors do not seem to be able to come up with a satisfactory or agreed solution.<br />
This is clearly a problem which must be addressed along a broad front and we need to start with education for both teenagers themselves and those people responsible for their upbringing and welfare. Changes need to be made to both eating habits and lifestyle and these changes will never come about unless the teenagers themselves understand that they have a serious problem and gain the desire to do something about it. Parents, educators and doctors can put the framework in place to solve the problem but, if the kids themselves do not have the desire to work within it then it will simply fail.<br />
Having brought the kids on board then the ball lies firmly in the court of the parents, schools, medical professionals and politicians who need to devise programs to get teenagers out of the house and away from the television and computer and into the fresh air to participate in activities which they will find constructive and enjoyable but which will, at the same time, give them the exercise they need.<br />
This is not an easy problem to solve but unless we combine forces to tackle it now we are likely to end up with a problem which is not simply difficult but actually impossible to solve.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">GastricBypassFacts.info provides a large number of obesity articles and includes specific advice on the problem of obesity in teens and one solution if it is not brought under control.</div><div style="overflow: hidden; text-align: justify;"><br />

There are many things that can contribute to obesity such as overeating, various diseases as well as lack of exercise. However, one of the main reasons why America is obese is due to the fact that people are overeating with the wrong foods.<br />
<b>So-Called Healthy Foods</b><br />
Most people are taught that meat, dairy, eggs, bread, and cereals are good for you, as they contain many essential nutrients. However, what you may not know is that it all comes down to marketing tactics. I am not saying that these foods do not contain essential ingredients, but, what they fail to tell you is that they are of little use to your body.<br />
Take meat for example, studies have shown that your body does not need all the proteins that are offered in meat. So what does your body do with the extra proteins? It either eliminates them, or they become toxic in your body and thus are stored in fat cells.<br />
A lot of foods that you have been led to believe to be healthy contain a lot of unnatural ingredients such as food additives, preservatives, colorants, hormones, antibiotics and many other substances that are foreign to the body.<br />
<b>Junk Food Cravings</b><br />
All of these so-called healthy foods can lead to various different nutritional deficiencies. When your body is depleted of nutrients, then it is also depleted of energy. So you reach for the foods that will give you energy fast. These usually are refined and processed sugars that your body can use instantly.<br />
In other words, your body starts to crave for junk foods that offer you a quick boost of energy, but no valuable nutrients. Thus the cycle continues, and the end result is overeating and obesity, and you never get your energy back.<br />
<b>Lack of Exercise</b><br />
Exercise takes energy. But if the foods that you eat do do supply you with the right nutrients to give you energy, then you won't feel like exercising. As a result the fat burning process slows down and you begin to gain weight even though you don't eat that much.<br />
<b>The Cure</b><br />
The best way that you can overcome and prevent overweight and obesity is by sticking to a clean and healthy diet which consists of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, nuts and seeds. These foods contain all the nutrients that your body needs so that you can overcome and control food cravings, and maintain your energy levels.</div><div id="article-resource">For more information on how to prevent disease and live a long and healthy life, visit LivingFood101.<br />

Over 65% of the American population is either overweight or obese. Why? There are quite a few reasons of why America has gotten so fat, but one of the most impressive revolves around the advent of processed foods.<br />
Nurse only factors that go into America's fatness they can be dizzying. For instance, were big concerns with today's youth is a basic around playing video games rather than playing outside. This is led to a significant incidence of childhood obesity and one that is not going to go away anytime soon.<br />
Another issue to consider is that with America being so fat, it will lead to a host of medical conditions in more patients than ever including hypertension, diabetes, along with heart disease. In this age of questioning who's going to pay for America's healthcare with the new healthcare laws, there will simply be an in adequate availability of resources to fix this epidemics consequences.<br />
Processed foods have been around for a long time. The concept behind these foods is that they have a longer shelf life, much less nutrition and natural foods, intend to be somewhat addictive to the American population. In the mid-1900s partially hydrogenated oils were invented which are commonly known as trans fats and became widespread in the 1980s.<br />
So in the 1980s behead all of these new foods with very little nutritional value, they taste great, and they have a long shelf life. The digital revolution tended to make this problem worse, as Americans were consuming more calories than ever and burning off less and less. Lawnmowers now have the look of tractors, wheelchairs are electric, elevators are everywhere along with escalators, and the end result is America has gained a lot of weight.<br />
Technology all in all is great. But along with that technology came the ability to put together great tasting unhealthy food and also many inventions that allow us to avoid burning off calories. The common nation has led to an unhealthy lifestyle that is not inevitable.<br />
Here are a few facts of how America got to be so overweight. Refrigerators have expanded by 20% over the last 35 years. Three fourths of trips under 1 mile are made I cars in United States. Americans consume on average 35 teaspoons of sugar each day. Americans spend on average 158 hours in front of the TV every month.<br />
The bottom line with how America got so fat is lack of moderation with diet and lack of physical activity. The common nation has produced baton of empty calories along with less activities that help to burn off those extra calories. America is fatter than ever and it appears that this problem is not going to go away anytime soon.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">Phoenix Integrative Medicine represents the premier weight loss center in Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ along with providing bioidentical hormone replacement and wellness programs for anti-aging and cancer prevention.<br />

If you or someone in your family has been diagnosed as morbidly obese, it can come as a terrible shock. Morbid obesity is a term which is usually reserved for someone with a body mass index of over 40, in other words weighing twice the ideal weight. However, that shock diagnosis can also be interpreted as a wake up call and can trigger a positive reaction after years of ignoring the problem. And the fact that serve around 3 million adults in America are morbidly obese should serve as a warning to anyone who is considerably overweight, encouraging them to take action to prevent their ending up in this category.<br />
First of all, it is important to understand the problems related to morbid obesity. Anyone suffering from this condition will know that it severely restricts lifestyle, making day to day activities which most of us take for granted either difficult or impossible. If the situation is allowed to become worse, sufferers can become so incapacitated that they can no longer leave the house, which in most cases means they are unable to work. Being stuck at home is not good for self confidence and of course the person's ability to exercise is also greatly reduced, which makes weight loss even more difficult. In addition, there are significant health risks associated with morbid obesity. These include diabetes, which can have series side effects, such as blindness and kidney failure, heart disease, many types of cancer, stroke and sleep apnea. There are more, but that list should be enough to motivate most people to take action, and if it doesn't, perhaps the fact that seriously obese people are twice as likely to die young as the rest of the population will make a difference.<br />
The quickest way to lose a large amount of weight is by gastric surgery, but this is a drastic solution and can have adverse side effects. Any form of surgery carries certain risks, and those risks are greatly increased the more overweight the patient, in fact, the mortality rate is relatively high at around 3-5%. Gastric surgery is therefore usually only considered as a last resort, when other options have been unsuccessful.<br />
Diet and exercise are the preferred options for weight loss and anyone who is morbidly obese should make sure that they have the advice and support of professionals in both these areas, and they should also be prepared to make major lifestyle changes. Medical help will be needed if a healthy weight is to be achieved and so anyone who is morbidly obese much work with a doctor, who will refer them to dieticians and other relevant professionals.<br />
If you have children and are obese yourself, the likelihood of your kids growing up to be severely overweight is increased. This may have some basis in genetics, but don't use that as an excuse, unless it has been proved medically. If you have children or grandchildren this should give you the incentive to lose weight, so that you can spend more time with them and to encourage them to develop healthy eating habits.<br />
Morbid obesity is a major health problem and needs to be taken seriously. It is not something which an individual should tackle alone, but which requires medical advice, the support of friends and family and a commitment to making lifelong change.<br />

Obesity means having more fats than your body can handle. Prolonged obesity leads to increased stress on your joints. This will not be apparent for young people but older people can feel it. This can also lead to arthritis in the long run.<br />

America is getting fatter everyday with fast foods feeding the voracious appetite with larger servings of saturated fat and more sugary soft drinks.<br />
While many Americans are not completely enamored with the idea of eating at fast foods everyday, these individuals are still getting fatter. Do we have a plague on our hands? Or does it have something to do with the way America has been consuming its calories?<br />
According to the Center for Disease Control or the CDC in the United States, the majority of the adult population in America is now ill with obesity. The figure is alarming, which is why we should do something about it now.<br />
According to the CDC around 60% of adult Americans now fall into the category of mildly obese to morbidly obese. Even with the country-wide recession, this figure is not budging. The problem seems to be much deeper than economics.<br />
<b>The factors</b><br />
According to the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute, the problem with overweight individuals in the United States is a mixture of social, cultural, psychological and genetic factors.<br />
Let us try to discuss each of these factors to shed light on this alarming development in the American population.<br />
1. <b>Social</b> - there are two extreme poles with regard to weight in America. One pole states that the ideal body figure should be stick-thin, and thus, food in general should be avoided.<br />
This pole has resulted in the production of anorexics and bulimics. The other pole has a "no-care" attitude, and says that we should eat all we want because we have full rights to our own bodies.<br />
Both extreme poles are problematic, dangerous and unfortunately, wildly popular. This means that teenagers as well as adults are espousing ideas from both these poles, and both are being damaged by this kind of thinking.<br />
2. <b>Cultural</b> - America has a bipolar personality with regards to weight and weight control. The culture of the thin wants women to be as thin as possible, forgetting that nutrition is still a big part of how humans survive on a day-to-day basis.<br />
The fast food culture on the other hand, encourages convenience, glossing over the number of calories and the harmful effects of too much cholesterol and body fat. Again, both these extreme poles are harming the populace.<br />
3. <b>Psychological</b> - some Americans might be finding comfort in overeating. The human psyche was designed in such a way that if it cannot cope with pressure, it finds "comfort activities". One of these popular "comfort activities" is eating.<br />
Chocolates, sugary foods and crunchy junk foods all fall into the category of comfort food. They fall into the category because they are easily available, tasty and come in large quantities.<br />
4. <b>Genetic</b> - though this is something that medicine cannot completely alter, genetics also plays a part in the rising number of obese adults.<br />
The premise here is simple- if your parents were obese, you would be predisposed to be obese as well. If you become obese, your children and your children's children will be predisposed to obesity too.<br />
It's a vicious cycle that we should try to stop by remedying obesity now.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">Author is the webmaster of Best Diet Pills. Over the past few decades, weight problems in children have been increasing rapidly, reaching what many people consider a crisis point in the last few years.<br />
According to the US Surgeon General, since 1980 the number of overweight children in the USA has doubled and the number of overweight adolescents has trebled. While the figures have been highlighted continuously in the media in recent times and the government and various non-government organizations have conducted research and seminars and produced white papers, there has been no head-way made into the actual problem.<br />
Discussions abound as to the reasons for this phenomenon however, there is no conclusive evidence of any particular cause. Nor is there substantiated research on what the effects will be. It is commonly accepted though that obesity is directly related to numerous health problems, the cost of which is born by the wider community.<br />
Common theories as to the cause point the finger at increasingly sedentary lifestyles, marketing of junk food directed specifically at children, lack of education about nutrition and availability of junk food and upsized portions. Undoubtedly all of these factors contribute somewhat but I believe that we have to look deeper to see how we are failing our kids.<br />
In fact, accepting that we are failing our kids may be the first truth we need to face. Children are not responsible for this problem. Should they know better than to eat too much candy or to drink too much cola? Of course. But we don't honestly expect children to take responsibility for their own well-being. If we did, we would try them as adults when they committed a crime.<br />
I don't believe it is good enough to say that children are overweight because they would rather play computer games than play outside. As a child I wasn't given a choice. My television and computer time was limited - I was sent out to play with my brother and sister and the neighbors' children. Likewise with my junk food intake. I had no say in the amount of junk food I was allowed to consume. It was monitored by my parents.<br />
These days it is considered old fashioned for a parent to intervene on a child's choices. But our children are suffering from obesity and related health problems, possibly even shortened life spans. Families are in a position where they can't be home to look after children - it is nearly impossible to raise children on a single wage or to return from work at a reasonable hour. Companies are given the right to self-regulate their policies regarding advertising to children and schools are under so much pressure for funding that they are willing to sell advertising to corporations who do not have children's best interests at heart. Lobby groups from restaurants and food manufacturers influence government policy and fast food restaurants offer the only playgrounds in poorer suburbs.<br />
It takes a village to raise a child - we all have to be involved. Our cultural choices, our political choices and our views on corporate freedom are all contributing to this incredibly sad problem. The terrible "fact" about obesity in American children is that we are all contributing to it and we only make the problem worse when we try to blame the children's own choices.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">I enjoy writing about topics of everyday importance and casting new light on them. It is estimated that overall obesity will be the number one killer ahead of tobacco in the United States. The reason why obesity is a concern is because of its link to other ailments that can prove fatal. In particular obesity and is associated with high blood pressure. It is a known risk factor for hypertension. In fact an increasing number of people are developing high blood pressure because of obesity in their childhood years. Combined with blood pressure obesity can be a lethal sentence for heart disease.<br />
Heart disease and hypertension are life threatening conditions that are directly associated with obesity. Being overweight in childhood as noted is related to plenteous chronic diseases that typically manifest later in adulthood. These include type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Studies have noted that 60 percent of overweight five-to-ten year-old children had at least one additional risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Apart from disease, overweight children are also at heightened risk for lower self-esteem, depression, self-blame and social rejection by both peers and adults.<br />
Studies note that in the United States in the last 25 years, the prevalence of children and adolescents who are overweight has tripled to reach 17.1% between the years 2003 and 2004. It is further discovered in research that the obesity epidemic is taking a hold of both girls and boys regardless of which state they are in, their racial and ethnic background and their socioeconomic status. However it has been observed that subgroups including Hispanics, African Americans and Native Americans are disproportionately affected.<br />
There are particular environments that influence the choices that children make regarding food and physical activity. These environments are namely home, work, school and clinical environments. It looks clear that if no interventions that are effective and targeted are taken, this will turn out to be a massive health problem going forward into the future as many adults will emerge with all types of diseases. The opportunity to halt the this trends remains at key points in the life and interaction of kids. Of particular note are the foods that kids are fed at the cited environments above.<br />
Health eating and regular activity will need to be inculcated at an early stage namely at school and at home. Teachers and parents alike have a duty to ensure a healthy eating lifestyle in these kids. Apparently children spend much of their childhood times at school and at home. Programs is schools perhaps even sponsored and managed by the federal governments are necessary and involving experts in healthy eating initiatives.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">Learn more about how to eat healthy. Whether the focus is weight loss, optimal health or some related nutritional issue, this seems to be the case.<br />
Historically, nutritional advice and solutions offered for problem states have been more complex than need be. The science behind fundamentals of wise dining is clear. Key principles are neither mysterious nor uncertain. No additional rain forests should be sacrificed for more books (and dissertations) on optimal nutrition.<br />
A sound understanding of wise dining invites an overview of foundation realities. These include unconventional explanations of why so many Americans are fat, what foods make the most difference for better and worse, the pace of body change, misplaced fears about terrorism and the downside of polite public service messages about obesity. Brief summaries on these matters will demonstrate the futility of obesity campaigns as not launched by public health authorities. This essay offers a few unwelcome facts about reality versus how obesity is currently addressed. These observations are based upon findings from multiple recent scientific findings, including a detailed long-term analysis of factors that influence weight gain conducted at Harvard University over the course of two decades. The Harvard research, known as the Nurses' Health Study, involved 120,877 nurses, doctors, dentists and veterinarians who, at the start of the research period, were healthy, not obese or otherwise suffering from any known medical problems. Every two years, the study subjects completed detailed questionnaires about their weight, eating and other habits. The findings were published in June 2011 in The New England Journal of Medicine.<br />
WHY THE UNPRECEDENTED OBESITY? While genetic inclinations may account for weight gain for some, other factors are usually more consequential. Americans who were lean and mean in their youth gain weight over the years little by little and bit by bit. This occurs for other than genetic reasons - influences that are largely social, economic and cultural. All these determinants are reflected in one key bottom-line fact - calories taken in are out of proportion to calories expended. Translated into simplest language, it comes down to this: Too much food and too little exercise is guaranteed to make you fat, eventually. "Eventually" usually sets in by middle age and gets worse after that.<br />
If the obesity epidemic could be explained in a sentence, that sentence would be something like this: "We exercise way too little but the diets we favor constitute an even 'weightier' problem."<br />
FOODS FOR BETTER, FOODS FOR WORSE! Comprehensive studies done at Harvard University, referenced at the end of this commentary, suggest what most wellness promoters have advocated for decades, namely, that exercise and nutrition are the foundation variables for effective weight management. However, other factors affect both in dramatic ways, especially sleep, the company kept, alcohol intake and other lifestyle factors, particularly excessive TV and self-abuse. ("Self-abuse" means smoking, not masturbation.)<br />
I was delighted to find that moderation in all things was shown NOT to be a good idea and the same can now be said, with supportive evidence to back it up, about dieting and other simplistic notions, such as counting calories and avoiding "fatty" foods. The guiding phrase that governs these issues always has been and remains "it depends." Short, spiffy-sounding rules mean little out of context with other variables, which make a key difference concerning health and weight gain over time for better or worse. In medicine, there are no magic bullets - and the same applies to nutrition concerning weight management.<br />
Some foods (e.g., potato chips, potatoes, sugar-sweetened beverages and red meats) are really, really bad. While the best course is to largely avoid the real stinkers, if your taste buds are undisciplined and you simply can not resist putting serious crap in your mouth, at least take remedial steps to mitigate the damage. Such steps include extra exercise in the days before and after such reckless indulgences, and loading up on the best foods (e.g., fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and yogurt) prior to and after going on a junk bender.<br />
REALTY CREEPS UP, NEVER LEAPS ON, YOUR BODY. Fat does not happen overnight - or in a week or a month. However, it's sneaking up on you if you are not active. By the time you realize its gaining, it has already settled in your stomach, thighs and ass - and it's nearly too late to do much about it. Making a comeback to normal, or better yet, a fit and functional attractive body is a hard road. You can do it, others have done it but it's just so much easier and more rational not to let reality sneak up on you in the first place. Reality, of course, is fat.<br />
FAT IS PROBABLY A GREATER THREAT TO YOU THAN AL-QAEDA. In the sense that fat is more likely to get to you and do some serious damage than any Al-Qaeda maniac (unless you vacation in Pakistan), you should take the dangers from fat seriously and employ evasive action. No more effective deterrent exists than a wellness lifestyle.<br />
I don't like to dwell on the dark side or negative consequences; it is pleasanter and more effective to focus on the positive, joyful and self-reinforcing positive returns from creating and sustaining a wellness mindset and habit pattern. But, sometimes I can't help it so let me simply note that fat in excess is a high-risk fast track to a host of very unpleasant states. For women, these dark side states include but are not limited to heart disease, diabetes, stroke and breast cancer and for men, high risks for heart disease, diabetes and colon cancer. You can use your imagination for the bright side payoffs of avoiding overweight via sound diet and vigorous exercise. However, I'll add one that appeals to vanity - you will always look better when trim than bloated and you won't have as much expense or frustration buying new stuff all the time because your wardrobe no longer fits.<br />
BEING NICE MAY NOT BE THE BEST APPROACH. Structural changes in the culture will be the surer path to obesity reduction than a continued barrage of health education messages from governmental and non-profit institutions. The epidemic of fat that afflicts sufferers and society, the immense costs of treatments and other burdens is well beyond personal action to reverse. People just can't do it, that is, manage wellness lifestyles. The facts of human nature, combined with affluence and the power of big business, overwhelm the slim chances consumers might have had for choosing and sustaining wise lifestyle choices. In short, it's too easy to get fat, too hard to become and stay fit. As noted Aussie nutrition expert Glenn Cardwell has shown, "we love easy - and society now offers nothing BUT easy." In America and other Western nations, nearly everyone can afford (or at least manage access to) energy expenditure substitutes (e.g., cell phones, television, donuts and so on) and democracy assures us the right to ruin ourselves if we choose to do so, which most do.<br />
So, match all these obesity-inducing factors against public service campaigns that offer information (e.g., a model plate to replace a model food pyramid) and what are the chances of arresting the spread of the national lard index? Pretty close to zero, don't you think?<br />
Mr. Cardwell does recognize two variables that history shows always create an average decline in body weight, but neither seems very desirable: War and famine. Both are always attended by other costs or perturbations even worse than an obese society. Quoting Cardwell: "Put another way, there is no obesity solution that has a respect for life. Obesity is the price you pay to live in a free, affluent democratic country."<br />
Well, don't let me discourage you. The numbers are rising every year at a heart stopping speed. People in this country need to revisit the fact that obese and overweight people don't get the good jobs or their health insurance rates go up. There are a lot of things we can do to help out our fellow man.<br />
Now, some people like the way they look and that's fine, who are we to judge and try to change their way of life. But there are also a good number of overweight people that are ready for a change but they lack the guidance and direction. They have tried all the fad diets with little or know improvement at the cost of ones health. Yeah, they lost the weight but put it right back on in a matter of months. Not to mention that they are either too embarrassed to go out in public, go to the gym and be ridiculed, or they just don't have the know how or the inspiration they need. I used to be that way. Until I woke up one morning and the infamous light bulb turned on over my head and I called my doctor and personal friend and asked him what I should do. The information he told me was life changing but simple.<br />
I asked myself why I didn't ever think of that. It was so important and life changing that I couldn't help but write my own personal blog about it.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;">For those that are interested simply go to: http://musclegainingproductreview.blogspot.com<br />

In the past 30 years the amount of obese children and adults has literally exploded in the U.S. While some of the causes of this health trend may seem obvious, there are some other less well-known theories. While these theories can be debated by experts and regular folk, everyone agrees that something must be done about the obesity problem.<br />
What causes obesity?<br />
Larger Serving Sizes<br />
The "Super Size" mentality doesn't just belong to the fast food industry. Seems like many restaurants offer huge serving sizes for everything from a chef salad, to spaghetti and meatballs, to a steak dinner. Most people have been raised to finish everything on their plate and when someone sits a giant plate of food down in front of you, you're more likely to try and finish it without even thinking much about it.<br />
Americans have now gotten used to eating larger portions per meal and that can translate into their own kitchens. There is a tendency to cook and serve larger meals at home too. Going back for seconds and third helpings is also common.<br />
Eating More Fast Food<br />
Studies have shown that the consumption of fast food meals has quadrupled from 1977 to 1996 and it's probably grown more since then. Our increasingly busy society means that more people don't have the time or inclination to cook meals from scratch at home.<br />
The average fast food meal consists of foods like: big burgers, large fries, chicken nuggets, pizza with lots of toppings, stuffed to the brim tacos, heavy milkshakes and sugary soft drinks. Many items are laden with fatty cheese and sauces. Yes, these foods taste great and are okay to eat in moderation, but Americans are substituting these foods for everyday meals.<br />
It used to be that most people ate a fairly nutritious meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner and occasionally they'd hit the fast food place. It seems like things have almost reversed themselves. For many people, at least one meal per day comes from fast food.<br />
Lack of Physical Exercise<br />
In order to maintain a healthy weight, eating healthy foods isn't enough. You need to exercise on a regular basis. Now, this exercise can mean going to the gym, playing a game of tennis, biking around the neighborhood or going out for a brisk walk around the park.<br />
Many people simply are not exercising at all, which contributes to their weight gain and ultimate unhealthy lifestyle. A lot of people have a mental block when it comes to exercise because it's been so long since they've done it. It's like exercise is almost a dirty word for some.<br />
However, if you want to preserve your healthy weight or get back down to one, then this is a must. If adults don't prioritize exercising for physical fitness, then the children of today are doomed to repeat the same patterns of obesity in the future - this isn't fair to them.<br />
Low Self-Esteem<br />
A lot of people struggle with low self-esteem or not feeling very good about themselves in general. These issues are often routed in their childhood and involve thoughts that are often buried deep in the subconscious. These negative thoughts often lead people to overeat or develop food addictions.<br />
Body image has become controversial due to the fact that super skinny models and actors are held up as the ideal standard of beauty. However, many people cannot achieve this look and shouldn't even try.<br />
Everyone is born with a certain natural body type and our society needs to do more to teach young people and adults that all types of bodies are to be admired and appreciated. Now, this doesn't mean that it's okay to be obese, but it does mean we should be more sympathetic to those who are and understand their struggles.<br />
After all, there's a fine line between just being overweight and becoming obese. Any one of us could cross into dangerous unhealthy territory due to bad habits. Feeling good about yourself no matter where you land on the weight scale should be everyone's top priority.<br />
Being Stressed Out<br />
Stress has been identified as a leading cause of many physical ailments, including obesity. When we feel stressed, we're more likely to turn to comfort foods that contain more fat and sugar.<br />
Think about the last time you felt really stressed. Did you grab a healthy apple or did you open up a candy bar and wolf it down?<br />
Stress is a part of everyday life, but more needs to be done to teach people how to control and manage stress with healthy, all natural alternatives. Eating donuts in the morning and a big sloppy hamburger at lunchtime may make you temporarily feel good, but ultimately, all that fat contributes to heart disease and diabetes. Being stressed out and overweight is often a deadly combination.<br />
Drugs and Medication<br />
Many drugs that people take for common maladies and health issues cause weight gain. It can be prescription medication for things like depression, diabetes, sleep disorders, birth control and blood pressure. Some steroid hormone drugs also can make you gain weight.<br />
Often, people don't feel they have a choice but to take this medication, leaving them feeling trapped in a heavier body they don't really want. More study needs to be done on how to reduce or prevent this side effect.<br />
Genetics and Family History<br />
For some people (not many), being overweight is in their genes. If both of your parents are overweight, then there is a higher probability that you are going to be also. While studies have found that there can be a predisposition to obesity among family members, this isn't an absolute.<br />
Even if you do come from a family that is naturally heavier, this doesn't mean that obesity should be allowed to just happen. Being chunky or big boned is quite different than being 300-400 pounds. Family history shouldn't be used as an excuse to let yourself go.<br />
With time, guidance and effort, obesity in America can be conquered, but it's not going to be easy or happen overnight. Each one of us will have to examine our own lifestyle and take action to include healthier eating and exercise habits in our daily routine.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;"><h3>About this Author</h3>Tired of looking at your bulging thighs, flabby stomach and out-of-shape body every morning? If you weren't aware of that fact, you should be. There is no reason to be embarrassed. There are no stupid questions. Without asking questions, you have less a chance of learning something new. Are the questions starting to form in your mind yet?<br />
If they are, let me assure you that obesity and youth are a serious problem in America at this time. Beyond just knowing that there's a problem, it's important for you (and everyone) to take an active role in helping try to eliminate the problem. Not everyone is going to be one hundred percent in shape all the time, but the more people who are, the better off we're going to be as a nation.<br />
Too often these days in America, people think that if the problem doesn't affect them directly that it's not something they should be concerned about. This is a dangerous attitude to have, especially for something as important as obesity and our youth. The problem is there and ignoring it won't make it go away no matter how much we wish it would just go away.<br />
The problem of youth obesity in America is not going to be solved overnight, but if enough Americans step forward and put their minds to it, we have a better chance of making sure the future of our youth is happy and healthy. And the good benefits of that are too numerous to list here.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;"><h3>About this Author</h3><div style="text-align: left;">Learn to how to quickly and effectively control your child's weight at [http://www.chubbykidstoskinnyteens.com] where you'll have the opportunity to download a free guide [http://www.chubbykidstoskinnyteens.com] that will help you and your child get started TODAY.</div></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

It can start as early as five to six years old. Children who are classified as obese in late childhood-early teen years are almost guaranteed that this problem will continue throughout their whole lives. What is amazing is that only one or two percent of weight issues are caused by legitimate physical problems.<br />
While the topic is increasingly featured on TV, online, and in the print media, the numbers continue to grow. The subject is now a focus of organizations like the Center for Disease Control. (CDC) Along with cancer, flu epidemics and the like, overeating is an actual public health issue. America's first lady has adopted childhood weight problems as her official cause.<br />
There are numerous causes of the "fattening" of Americans. In fact, the CDC has coined a term, obesogenic to explain the phenomena to some degree. In simple terms, it means that Americans are influenced by items and activities that encourage overeating, fat rich foods and a lack of exercise. Simple activities like walking and climbing stairs are now looked at as extra-ciricular activities.<br />
Childhood obesity can result from numerous factors, some of which are environmental and cultural. Too many families today think that the drive -through at a fast food joint qualifies as dinner together. Some sit down together at the kitchen table, yet their upbringing considers heaping bowls of pasta and potatoes as a way of showing love. Being online on social networking sites is replacing going over to neighbor's house to play for a lot of kids.<br />
When a person eats more than their body can burn up, weight can pile on. Add to this the genetic aspect and overweight parent raises the chance of his/her child following their lead by 50 percent. This percentage climbs to 80 when both parents are tipping the scales beyond what is normal.<br />
Without recognition of the immensity of the problem of obesity in the United States, our entire country risks becoming sluggish and in turn, less adaptable and expedient than emerging economic powers like China and India. These cultures are far more inclined to eat smaller portions and red meat is not a daily part of their diets. Add to this the lack of over-processed white foods like enriched flours and sugar, and it easy to see how the way Americans eat is slowly but surely affecting our nation in numerous ways.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;"><h3>About this Author</h3>If you recognize that you are showing some of the signs of one of the Diabetes types, you should recognize that you can take preventative medicine and natural remedies that can help show you how-to prevent diabetes. Did you know that in the United States 2/3 of the population are overweight? Nearly a third is considered obese. The sad fact is obesity claims 325,000 lives each year. These stats are alarming.<br />
Obese people have a higher probability of premature death than someone at a normal healthy weight. Here are some health disorders often associated with obesity that may put life at risk.<br />
<ul><li>Cancer</li>
<li>Coronary vascular disease/Heart Disease</li>
<li>Diabetes-type 2</li>
<li>Sleep apnea</li>
<li>Osteoarthritis</li>
<li>Thyroid problems</li>
<li>High blood pressure</li>
<li>Acid Reflex</li>
<li>Stress urinary incontinence</li>
<li>Depression with possible thoughts of suicide</li>
</ul>Besides these serious health conditions it is a fact that obesity can have an adverse effect in many areas of a person's life. If you are obese you may already have experienced the following;<br />
<ul><li>discrimination in the workplace</li>
<li>been denied a job</li>
<li>maybe cut from a sport or team</li>
<li>have failed personal relationships</li>
<li>personal issues like; heavy breathing, lack of energy, irregular digestion, or excessive sweating</li>
<li>lack of confidence</li>
<li>low self esteem</li>
<li>social seclusion</li>
</ul>Why are we allowing obesity to steal our lives? We have been a nation living in the fast lane willing to compromise healthy food choices and good eating habits for convenience. Fast easy available food sources have won hands down. Unfortunately we do not realize what we are passing onto our children. We cannot continue this dangerous cycle.<br />
When my daughter was a toddler my friend and I would say on our frequent trips to the mall, "have french-fry will travel." Yes, we were guilty of food rewards to keep our kids happy during our all day shopping excursions. I heard it said just this past week, "food that comes through a car window is not food." We are now paying for our bad habits with our health, our family's health, and the heath of our entire nation.<br />
If we decide to make better food choices it will not be affective without exercise. America's fascination and interest in computers, video gaming, and incredible TV programming are all contributing factors to our weight problems. We must get up from the couch and off the computers and move. Parents need to set better examples for their children by regaining their health and adopting a regular weekly exercise routine. If we do not seek a solution soon to the problem that our country faces in obesity our nation will become weakened and the cycle will continue.</div><div id="article-resource" style="text-align: justify;"><h3>About this Author</h3>C.
